President of the Republic not voting on Sunday is “burying his head in the sand”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, called for voting in the legislative elections on Sunday in a brief statement to the country, this Saturday, a day of reflection.
“Vote tomorrow for the future of Portugal”, defended the head of state, stressing “With today’s world, more complex and unpredictable, not participating, not deciding, not voting makes even less sense than in other elections”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also recalled that the global context of 2025 is “radically different from the world of 2024”, having, once again, highlighted “the return to power” of Donald Trump, underlining the changes that this brought “in relations with Europe, Russia and China”.
For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, not voting “would be like burying your head in the sand, remaining indifferent to the gravity of the moment, acting absent”. And “as we know from our daily lives, those who are absent sooner or later end up losing their reason and limiting themselves, as the people say, to crying over spilt milk”, he added.
Finally, the President of the Republic argued that “voting at this time is contributing to stability in the midst of an unstable world” and also took the opportunity to remind that “there cannot be new elections constitutionally until May 2026”.
